All Souls´ Day
The commemoration of all deceased,
or in other words All Souls´ Day takes place on 2nd November, immediately after 1st November, which is All Saints´ Day.
The night before All Souls´ Day is the night when the world of living and the kingdom of deceased join in one. It is the most
magical night in a year and according to traditional belief the deceased visit our world during this night.
All Souls´ Day was introduced by the cleric Odilo in the year 998, who tried this way to fight against pagan ceremonies.
In 13th century this custom spread in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. In the year 1915 Benedikt XVth introduced this
holiday to the whole Catholic Church. In our country on this day otherwise silent cemeteries are filled with people,
who bring flowers and light candles on the graves.
During these days we remember those close to us and the impact they had on our lives. They were parts of our life,
took care of us, and loved us. Then they left our world and an empty space behind. Our children, who did not know them,
will join us to put flowers on their graves and light a candle for them.
It is up to us to tell them about our beloved ones, to open the box of memories and allow them to look into the world,
which although it does not exist anymore, it is so important to us. To the world, which if it hadn’t existed, we would not be here.
