History of Slovakia
The today‘s territory of Slovakia was settled already in the primeval ages. Discoveries that show evidence come from the eras of different civilizations. One of the significant archeologic discoveries is a mould of a Neanderthal man skull from Gánovce by Poprad. From the oldest ages there were preserved lots of material sources: dishes, tools, weapons, as well as a statue of a woman - Venus from Nitriansky Hrádok. She is very famous perhaps because she has been given the honour to be on the Slovak 2 crown coin.
In our territory, the territory between the Tatras and the Danube river, the first people – Celts- are mentioned in the oldest records from 3rd century BC. After them there were left behind the Biatek coins which are depicted on the Slovak 5 crown coin.
As the first territorial entity was mentioned the Great Samo’s Empire, which originates from 7th. Century A.D.. King Samo was a tradesman and had many wives.
Later on there is mentioned the separation of Empire into principalities – Nitrian principality was Pribina‘s. Pribina is on the Slovak 20 crown note. Moravian principality was Mojmir‘s.
